RURAL SOLAR BOAT CHALLENGE 2009
Saturday, October 10, 2009

Bannockburn Primary School is looking forward to once again hosting its own Rural Solar Boat Challenge.

The Rural Solar Boat Challenge is for model solar-powered boats. Teams of interested students can participate. We have teams from across the Grampians region and greater Geelong accepting the challenge.

Cost? $20.00 per School (up to 4 teams of 4 students).

Download entry forms and other useful information from the links at the left.

Also on the day there will be a solar car challenge for teams to
compete and other engineering based activities.

Teams can win prizes for:
  • Best decorated boat
  • Best use of recycled materials
  • Innovative design and construction
  • Fastest boat etc
This year we are again able to provide most of the equipment needed for the construction of the boats (solar cells, motors, propellers). We are able to do this through a grant provided by the School Focussed Youth Service in Ballarat. This offer is limited to the first 10 teams that enter.

We provide expertise on vehicle design and construction. We have a teaching unit prepared for staff that will guide teachers information on integrating the solar boat challenge into the classroom. Our aim is to provide an engaging challenge for teams as they investigate and build their solar-powered boats. Participant groups will meet for a day of boat races and other engineering challenges.

To help involve parents, we will have an opportunity for groups to build a simple car at the Challenge Day and then race these. This will encourage collaboration between children and their parents as well as between parents from the same school.

The project will:
  • Develop cooperative and collaborative decision making skills.
  • Give children the opportunity to develop their skills, and to learn about design and engineering with solar powered vehicles.
  • Help children learn about sustainable resources
  • Help children learn about energy, engineering, design and construction parameters.
  • Help children develop their social and interpersonal skills.

Our objectives in implementing this project are to:
  1. To Involve our wider schools network in a fun, and cooperative learning unit.
  2. To develop skills in such areas as engineering, science technology and maths.
  3. To encourage the use of sustainable energy solutions.

We aim to cater for 50 teams (up to 150 students) this year. We will also cater for approximately 50 adults in the car races.

We have two solar boat pools (8m x 1.5m), and a car track. Batteries, motors and all components necessary for the design and construction of a battery powered car will be available on the day.

With so many expected on the day, extra activities are planned.
This will include activities for siblings of team members - such as clock making, digital microscopes, air-powered rockets, wooden models and more.

The focus is on skills, knowledge, processes that children can use.

It involves parents, students and teachers working together.

This is a great chance for children in small schools to mingle with and collaborate with others.

This will be a fun day for everyone!
